All the good ones are in downtown Lafayette, Indiana. They come here because we have all the good sites for photography (historic downtown, Purdue University, a world-class extensive park system, dozens of historic neighborhoods, etc etc etc).

But you could always get married here, I can recommend some excellent places. I've seen a lot of couples tie the knot on the "Pedestrain Bridge" which lies at the meeting point between Lafayette, West Lafayette, and Purdue University. It's also the downtown district, where nearly all of the photographers are based.

I'll try to find links:

the bridge (downtown lafayette side):

the bridge (west lafayette/purdue university side)

Popular reception building (sorry can't remember the name of it off the top of my head):

this could be another choice:

Make appointments with various photographers in your area. If they are proud of their work, they will be more than willing to show you their work. If you like what you see and the price is within your budget, book them. Photographers are as different in their work as caterers or bridal salons or cake designers are. You need to check them out for yourself.

I visited with one photographer that showed me work that looked like it was from the 80's. Now I'm a big fan of the 80's...but not when it comes to my wedding photographs. The photographer that we chose to do our pictures had albums in every style. Old fashioned, coffee table books (the pictures are printed right on the pages of the book), black and white, color, you name it. I still don't know what I want exactly when it comes to my wedding pics, but I know I can call him the day before the wedding and let him know and he'll do it. I've seen the proof.

You need to check out their work for yourself.

Ask around, ask if you could have some references from other brides. View their portfolios, find out if you like their style of photographing. It really depends on whether you want classic pictures, or stuff that is more fun.

You will need to first find them and then personally interview them.

Ask them for examples of their works.

And here's some icing on the cake: See if the photographer will release full rights of the photos to you by giving you all the ORIGINAL files on CD-R or DVD.

Also ask for references. You will note on Y!A that some couples have been burned in that after paying top dollar, they still haven't received their wedding albums after 6 or 7 months!!!!

Good luck and happy hunting.

Look at their work online first, give them a call, if you like the sound of their voice and you make a connection, then arrange to meet. If they tick all the boxes, then book them right away as good photographers get booked up quickly. check out Digiquick Photography.

1. Make sure you see a couple of complete wedding albums (as too many newbee photographers will try to blag)

2. Check out the colours of the prints. (and also the price of re prints)

3. Make sure they have insurance and a back up plan if any thing was to go wrong

4. Personality is a must, as you will be spending all day with him or her, you need to be sure that you will get on.

And just have fun

Well, you should look at their pictures first. Most photographers have websites, just Google "yourcity, statehere wedding photographer". Based on this you can decide if you're looking for a regular photographer or the photojournalism twist. Photojournalists take more non-posed pictures... they try to get you when you're not thinking about being photographed. They will take posed pictures for you, but they won't want to spend hours doing so. They'll take a lot of pictures while you're getting ready, during the ceremony, and during the reception.

You'll find package prices on the website too. This will give you an idea of where you should put your budget. Around here, I can find a not so great photographer for $500, and I can find a super expensive photographer for $4000! But the good, reasonable photographers fall into the $1000-$1500 range.

You have to decide if you want the photographer to send you a big package of actually printed photographs or if you want to be able to print your own. If you want to be able to print your own, you'll need a photographer that gives you all the copyrights to your photos in the package you purchase and will provide them either online or on a CD.

Once you have a few in your area that you like and fit in your price range, you can start interviewing them. There's lots of wedding planners online which include a questionnarie on what to ask each vendor during an interview. You can google that too.

Good luck!
