We used 2 photo groups- Church and the scenic park were done by a pro wedding guy. Then he was done. The reception which was a hellacious party – (we even did a change of clothes, replaced band w dj, and announcement at mid point (11pm) that the party is about to crank up. For the reception we hired two aspiring photo students that had some experience – they got “wanted posters” targeted guests and were told only candid shots – no posing. Kept the party flowing.

I am paying $900 for 8hours of having my photographer. As the final timeline is sorted out I am considering asking if I could book her for longer for an additional fee because we have a very short time between ceremony & reception (out of convenience for the guests) so I want some pictures taken before the ceremony .
But if I have to go with only 8 hours I will have her not taking photos at the tail end of the reception.

Even though I have not been married my dad was a wedding photographer and think that he was there for maybe 5 or 6 hours.
Before and after shots, photos of important people, etc.
I don’t know what he charged because it depends on what size reprints you order, 4X6, 8X10, what kind of album you ordered etc.
He has since retired from doing wedding photography but my advice would definitely be shop around and maybe find one who is willing to work with you and your budget.
I know this information may not be helpful but if you can spend a little more on the photographer than other things.
You might want to be sure that the photographer has a good resume or sample albums that you can look through.
Good luck and congrats!

Our photographer was around all day. But he didnt bother us. He was professional. He would appear, take some pictures, then go away. He wasnt like my shadow or anything, so it wasnt a problem. Looking back, Im glad that we had him for the whole day. There were some great pictures taken before the wedding. The whole day is a whirlwind, and long after your wedding is over, your pictures will be the only thing you have left. But it just depends on what you want out of your wedding photos. We spent about 7k on photographer.

We paid for 5 hours. The photographer got there 2 hours before the ceremony and took pictures of me getting ready, detail shots of the church and flowers, etc. and family pictures. Our reception was at the same location and was a pretty short reception–heavy appetizers and cake. I think we didn’t use the last 30 minutes of her time because we left the reception earlier than we planned. It wasn’t awkward for them to be there that long because they weren’t always with me–took the grooms pics separately, ran down to the reception room to get pictures of the cake, etc.
We paid around $1800 but that included digital rights to the photographs so we could make our own prints and the album.
