What are some things to ask when meeting our wedding photographer?

  • Priscilla J posted: 24 Mar at 7:49 pm

Ask her how long they have been a photographer. Defiantly ask to see a portfolio of there pictures. That will let you know how good or bad they are. Ask for a check list of the photo’s you want her to take. It makes it easier for her to make sure she takes all the pictures that you want. hope this helps..good luck

First, be sure that you get everything in writing.

Who gets the rights to the pictures? Do you get to keep the originals, or is the photographer going to use them in her portfolio? Are they digital or not? What is the lighting like, and is she okay dealing with different lighting situations? Does she have experience with weddings? Is she going to take pictures of the wedding party after the wedding, and if so, for how long? Is she open to being at the reception?

Also, be sure to make your wishes known. This is as much her interview of you as it is yours of her. What specific shots do you want? Do you want her behind the altar taking pictures, or just in the audience? Are you going to allow her artistic license with them, or are you going to be more demanding?

Hope this helps, and good luck!

Have you looked at their previous work?

Ask about how they want to take the photos, posed or in the moment?

Are you just wanting them for your wedding or reception too? (Do they charge hourly or by the job?)

Are they charging more for photos to be in black and white or sepia?

How long will it take to get the pictures back?

How do they want to schedule photos?

Ask for numbers of previous clients to consult with them.
Ask for examples of different weddings they have done.
Get online or look in some bridal magazines for lists of different shots you might want and don’t be afraid to bring your list with you and let the photographer know what you want up front.

Ask them if they’re used to doing weddings, and if they will respect the sanctity of the occasion. Some photographers think that weddings are just a chance to get beautiful pictures, and will stand in front of guests to get pictures.

Here are a few questions that I think are important to ask him/her. Also make sure that you feel comfortable and go with your gut instinct. Your wedding photos are very important and you definitely want to make sure that you get what you want – especially considering what most people charge for photography these days.

Make sure you get a clear contract listing everything that you get – the hours they will be working, how many photos, who has the right to the photos, albums, etc.

Are they the ones who are taking the pictures?

Do they have an assistant? If yes, will you be able to meet the assistant beforehand?

How many pictures will they be taking?

How much will they charge if you want extra prints?

Is there a deposit? When do they want to be paid?

What kind of equipment do they use? Camera? Lighting? Tripod?

Do you shoot in color or black and white? Or both? Do you shoot in a digital format that can create both color and b/w versions of the same picture?

Will your wedding be the only event that they have booked for that day or for that weekend?

What happens if they get sick? Do they have a backup?

Have they ever worked at the event location before? (It is always good if they have – this way they know the layout of the place, where to take good photo’s, etc)

What type of attire will they be wearing?

How long after the wedding will the pictures be ready?

Do they have liability insurance in the event that something goes wrong?

Do they have any references that you can contact? It’s always good to talk with someone who has had previous experience. You can also try looking them up online – you’d be surprised how many reviews are out there.
